I’m Tamara, the maker behind Grain & Stitch.

From Rural Roots to Creative Heights

Growing up in small town, rural Iowa, my exposure to fashion was in the grips of my hands flipping through the latest issue of YM or Teen Vogue. I read them over and over and was sure someday I would be wearing exquisite gowns at fancy parties, own a high fashion boutique or be a model walking on the runway. As I got older, my interest in second hand, vintage and heirloom things grew alongside my love for fashion. I developed a deep appreciation for the stories objects carry. I don’t know too many kids who found their fashion inspiration in thrift shops when I was in high school. My journey has taken me far and wide, but it eventually brought me back to Iowa to pursue my dream of building a fashion brand my way: Grain & Stitch.

Grain & Stitch is more than a business—it’s a reflection of my belief that the items we surround ourselves with should be as unique as the lives we live. Each item I create is made with imagination, care, and purpose. Here, style isn’t just about what we wear; it’s about the stories we create, share and pass on.

reFashion Passion

I didn’t know about sustainability or upcycling when I made Barbie doll clothes from fabric scraps as a child. My fascination with things from the past, beautiful textiles and working with my hands has been a lifelong road of discovery that has brought me here making one of a kind fashion for you.

What Makes Grain & Stitch Special

Every item I create has a story to tell. Whether it’s a dress made from a set of pillowcases embroidered by my grandma, or an iron-on patch crafted from the embroidery on a vintage tea towel, my work is all about finding beauty and opportunity in items that had a previous life. In addition to my handmade collections, I offer custom sewing, alterations, and repair services—because I believe that everything deserves a second chance to shine. I also love sharing the joy of making, so I’m working on offering DIY kits and workshops, helping others explore their own creative journeys.

Connecting With You

I’m always excited to meet fellow makers and customers who appreciate handmade goods and who “get it”. I say our creations are “Style with a Story,” which reflects my mission to create pieces that bring joy and meaning to the wearer. Each garment has a way of finding their person, as if it were created especially for them, even if we’ve never met before.
